The Oak Ridges Trail Association (ORTA) is pleased to recognize the support of the Trail Care Grant Program, which has helped strengthen stewardship of approximately 15 kilometres of the Trans Canada Trail in Uxbridge. The funded trail sections include Walker Woods, the Secord Forest and Wildlife Area, and the Goodwood Tract.
Grant funding enabled ORTA to purchase a mower and string trimmer, providing volunteers with the equipment needed to manage vegetation growth and keep trails safe, accessible, and enjoyable for all users. These tools have enhanced the ability of ORTA’s volunteer trail stewards to maintain the trail corridor efficiently and safely throughout the growing season.
The grant also supported a Trail Maintenance Volunteer Appreciation Event held on July 14, 2026. Eleven volunteers attended the event, which celebrated the dedication of the individuals who contribute their time and expertise to trail inspections, vegetation management, stewardship activities, and ongoing trail maintenance. Several volunteers recognized at the event have supported ORTA’s trail stewardship efforts for more than 20 years.
ORTA volunteers have maintained the Trans Canada Trail through Walker Woods for more than 15 years and have stewarded the Goodwood Tract section for approximately seven years. This long-standing commitment helps ensure that residents and visitors can safely enjoy one of Ontario’s most significant trail networks.
The grant-supported maintenance work also helped prepare the trail for the 2026 Oak Ridges Moraine Adventure Relay. The event brought together 185 racers, more than 120 volunteers, 20 teams, and 19 sponsors in celebration of the Oak Ridges Moraine Trail system. A portion of the Trans Canada Trail maintained by ORTA formed part of Stage 10 of the relay, helping showcase the natural beauty and recreational value of the Moraine.
Beyond trail maintenance, ORTA continues to connect people with nature through guided hiking opportunities. Since January 2026, volunteer hike leaders have led approximately 50 guided hikes in Uxbridge, many of which travelled along sections of the Trans Canada Trail. These hikes encourage active lifestyles while fostering appreciation for the Oak Ridges Moraine and local trail systems.
ORTA extends its sincere thanks to the Trail Care Grant Program for supporting trail stewardship, volunteer engagement, and public access to high-quality outdoor recreation experiences. This investment helps ensure that the Trans Canada Trail remains safe, welcoming, and accessible for current and future generations.
